“An architect should be a behind-the-scenes director,” says Giulia. “A mediator between nature, architecture, and the communities that live in the space. The goal is not to impose, but to enhance—creating a more ...sustainable future by building on what already exists.”

This philosophy is central to CRA’s projects, including the Mutti Canteen, where Giulia has played a key role. The project reflects CRA’s commitment to requalifying and improving existing environments, blending innovation with respect for the past. By introducing a new building that harmonizes with its context, the Mutti Canteen embodies an architecture of quiet collaboration—free of protagonism, yet rich in purpose. Through sustainable materials and innovative solutions, the project demonstrates how architecture can coexist with, rather than dominate, its landscape.

For Giulia, this approach represents the heart of CRA’s vision: a balance between past and future, between creation and requalification. “This is what makes architecture exciting,” she says. “Finding harmony between these elements is both our greatest challenge and our greatest reward.”

Giulia earned her Master’s in Architecture between Genoa and Seoul, focusing on "Collective Cities" for the 2019 Seoul Biennale, where she explored the requalification of abandoned structures. After gaining experience in Berlin across all phases of architectural design, she joined CRA’s design department in Turin. Here, she contributes to projects that exemplify CRA’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and creating architecture that enriches the spaces we inhabit.

“I believe design is about shaping experiences that connect people and purpose,” says Xavier, an Industrial Designer at CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, where he contributes to the Product Design team. Xavier joined CRA in ...June 2023, taking on a role in R&D by transforming visionary concepts into industrialized solutions.

A graduate of ELISAVA Design School in Barcelona, Xavier earned a double degree in Industrial Design Engineering and Product Design in 2022. His work reflects a vision of creating objects that resonate deeply with users.

Upon joining CRA, Xavier found a natural synergy with Feeling the Energy, a project that explores how design can shape meaningful experiences, challenge conventional perspectives, and contribute to a positive impact in the spaces it occupies. This philosophy strongly aligns with his own approach to design.

Feeling the Energy encapsulates CRA’s commitment to innovation and user-centered design. By leveraging advanced manufacturing techniques and sustainable materials, the project pushes the boundaries of design to craft solutions that are both functional and inspiring. It’s a testament to CRA’s ability to merge creativity with purpose, delivering designs that foster deeper connections and meaningful interactions.

Quisimangia continues the collaboration between CRA and Mutti, which began with The Greenary, an award-winning private residence. The project integrates architecture with nature, featuring a green roof made from compacted earth and a glass-enclosed meadow-level dining hall. Its floors, crafted from tomato skins—a byproduct of Mutti's production line—celebrate the creative reuse of materials.

As Carlo Ratti says: "This clod of earth rising from the ground creates a constant dialogue with nature. Instead of a ‘déjeuner sur l’herbe,’ we could call it a ‘déjeuner sous l’herbe,’ dining under the grass.”

The culinary experience is curated by Vicook, the catering arm of Michelin-starred chefs Chicco and Bobo Cerea, making Quisimangia a unique destination for innovation, quality, and taste.

“We design with the future in mind," says Monika, Partner-in-Charge at CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, where she leads research and planning projects focused on urban environments.

Monika joined CRA in 2012 and has since been involved in several key projects, including CapitaSpring, the Italian Pavilion at EXPO Dubai, and urban masterplans in the Middle East.

One of Monika's notable contributions is CapitaSpring, a 51-storey vertical community in Singapore that seamlessly integrates work, living, and leisure. Designed as a sustainable, flexible, and connected workspace, CapitaSpring is perfectly aligned with Singapore’s evolving hybrid work strategies. Its adaptable spaces allow tenants to scale or adjust their workspace needs effortlessly, supported by advanced WiFi technology and a dedicated mobile app.

Reflecting on the design process, Monika explains that the goal was to create spaces that could adapt to future needs. "For example," she notes, "the 4-storey car park is designed to be repurposed into a market or workspace should the demand for parking decrease."

CapitaSpring was built with innovation at its core, leveraging advanced digital tools such as BIM modeling, Virtual Design & Construction, and prefab systems. This approach led to a 50% increase in construction productivity, underscoring CRA’s commitment to efficiency and sustainability in modern architecture.

Nestled in the green countryside near Parma, in the heart of Italy’s Food Valley, The Greenary is a one-of-a-kind residence that pushes the boundaries of natural and artificial integration. Built around Alma, a 60-year-old ficus tree that stands ten meters tall, this transformed farmhouse speaks to our innate connection with the natural world. Created to welcome both a family and animals—including donkeys, dogs, and frogs—the house employs natural light and advanced climate systems to sustain all its inhabitants. With seven terraced levels, it offers a dynamic spatial journey influenced by classic 20th-century design principles. The Greenary presents a thoughtful approach to residential architecture, where nature and design coexist in harmony. @crassociati #CarloRatti #biophilicarchitecture #green #greenary #architecture

Umberto recently presented data-based tools that can help city leaders and policymakers make more livable, inclusive, and lively downtowns at @citylab session “Emerging Strategies for Downtown Revitalization”.
“Atlas of the Senseable City,” co-authored by Carlo Ratti and Antoine Picon, was just published this week by Yale University Press. The book examines how dynamic mapping of cities—using digital technologies to map changing aspects of a city in motion, e.g. pollution, pedestrian flows, commuting traffic—creates new opportunities to visualize information, address urban challenges, implement change, and understand the built environment in more depth. “Used correctly, maps can be irreplaceable tools for democracy,” says Carlo Ratti, director of the Senseable City Lab. “New maps make the world more visible to all. The right maps can help individuals navigate the chaos of modern life, and empower activists to notice and highlight problems in their communities.” Link in our bio to purchase a copy!

In 2018, SCL introduced City Scanner, a mobile sensing platform for fleets of everyday vehicles that promised a more cost-effective, localized measurement of urban air pollution and heat than traditional methods. SCL has now launched Flatburn, an open-source City Scanner. A step-by-step guide — including hardware schematics, 3D-printable designs and data acquisition software — is made freely available, so citizens can deploy and customize Flatburn themselves. Check out the link in our bio for more news coverage of Flatburn, or visit senseable.mit.edu/flatburn/ for more information.
What’s the trade-off between privacy and benefits of data-driven solutions? Introducing: Data Slots, a game developed by a team at SCL to evaluate decisions about sharing one’s personal data and how it can be used to shape solutions to urban challenges. In a few short rounds, players collect data cards to design and create a data-driven idea to apply to three scenarios: a public space, a living environment, or a work environment. The proposed ideas are tracked on a global scoreboard then ranked by other players, allowing peers to engage and assess each other’s proposals. Data Slots has been played over 700 times in dozens of countries from Norway to Colombia to Lebanon and is now available online in 12 languages. Are you ready to play? Where do stolen bicycles in Amsterdam go? Researchers at MIT and AMS Institute recently revealed the results of a collaborative project "Bike Trafficking" in which 100 bikes were fitted with mobile trackers and chained in high-theft areas of the city. Over a six-month period, 70 bikes were stolen; 68 remained in Amsterdam; and 22 moved in a such a similar way as to suggest a subnetwork. As Melanie van der Horst, deputy mayor of Amsterdam, said to MIT News, “This research makes it clear that part of bicycle theft is organized.”

REPOST from @mitdusp:
The built environment of a city is networked and connected via its streets. Streets provide social, physical, and economic access, but they are often designed to favor the use of single-occupancy vehicles to the detriment of pedestrians. Slow zones - areas that are protected via speed limit reductions - are designed to be more pedestrian-friendly, encourage alternative modes of mobility, and create social gathering spaces. But how effective are slow zones at generating these results?
\\
A new paper by #dusp's Arianna Salazar Miranda @_tinker_, Cate Heine, Fabio Duarte, Katja Schechtner, and Carlo Ratti leverages social media data in the city of Paris to examine this question.

🚨NEW PROJECT🚨 How attractive is a city centre?
By analyzing commuting distance and time from global cities, we found a universality in urban mobility – the destination of the center loses its attractiveness as nodes of urban activity emerge to compete on the periphery.
