Something is thinning in public space. Using AI, Carlo Ratti’s team compared 1970s footage with today in New York, Boston and Philadelphia: people walk faster and linger less. The fix is design: shade, seats, water, small interventions tested with data. The agora isn’t dead.

#Biophilia refers to the benefits that contact with #nature brings to humans.
But, do we all value nature the same way across the globe? 🌎
Feeling Nature explores this question. We trained a visual AI model on street view imagery and survey responses from eight cities across different biomes—revealing how people perceive and prioritize nature in their environments.

Maker Faire Rome - The European Edition @makerfairerome came to an end. It was great to meet so much young talent enthusiastic about science and technology! We thank SCL consortium members @armadeicarabinieri, @crearicerca and @faetechnology for hosting us at their booths, and @ambasciatausa for supporting the initiative.
Umberto recently presented data-based tools that can help city leaders and policymakers make more livable, inclusive, and lively downtowns at @citylab session “Emerging Strategies for Downtown Revitalization”.
SCL`s City Scanner project featuring #Flatburn is on display at the #VeniceBiennale2023. The exhibit, ‘Rebuilding Beirut: Using Data to Co-Design a New Future,’ is part of the sixth biennial architecture exhibition ‘Time Space Existence’ presented by the European Cultural Centre (ECC). The exhibit also features two other research projects from @MITSAP that all support the rebuilding efforts in Beirut following the disastrous explosion at Port of Beirut in August 2020.
The exhibit is open through November 26, 2023 in Venice at the Palazzo Bembo. You can buy tickets and plan your visit to the exhibit at: https://www.labiennale.org/en.

Over five years #Paris reduced traffic speed in almost 50% of its streets. In Slow Zones we use 11.7 million geo-tagged tweets to map how people move in Paris. We found that Paris’ slow zones initiative has been fostering higher activities in these areas. Also, comparing with nearby streets with similar characteristics, those subjected to the slow zones policies attract individuals from a more diverse social background. Our study offers evidence of the benefits that slowing cars down and making streets friendlier to #pedestrians creates opportunities to have more and more diverse people using slow zones, which can be used as a precedent to other cities considering to implement similar policies.

AquaPraça has officially completed its journey as one of the defining landmarks of COP30 — and soon, a lasting cultural landmark for Belém.
Designed by CRA–Carlo Ratti Associati and Höweler + Yoon, the floating plaza now rests on the Guajará Bay, rising and falling with the Amazon tides as it hosts cultural events and creates new public spaces where people can meet the water at eye level. During this year’s climate summit alone, AquaPraça has already welcomed over 25,000 visitors.
The project was developed in partnership with Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, and made possible thanks to a wide international coalition including CIHEAM Bari and the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate program, with support from BF International – Member of BF S.p.A. Group (AquaPraça COP30 Naming Partner), Bloomberg Philanthropies, Costa Crociere, ENEL, and Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane.
Built by Cimolai, Italy’s leading advanced steel construction company, AquaPraça will be donated by Italy to Brazil after COP30 — becoming a permanent community space dedicated to climate engagement, cultural initiatives, and creative industries in partnership with the State of Pará.

AquaPraça has arrived in Belém for COP30.
After its first unveiling in Venice, the floating plaza is now anchored on the Guajará Bay as part of the Italian Pavilion at the UN Climate Conference — emerging as one of the defining landmarks of COP30. Designed to rise and fall with the tides, it will host conversations, cultural programs, and climate action throughout the summit.
Designed by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Höweler + Yoon, AquaPraça was unveiled at the UN Climate Change Conference COP30 in Belém by Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Italy’s Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, and the COP30 Presidency.
AquaPraça was made possible through a unique international coalition, including the Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation, CIHEAM Bari, and the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate program, and with the support of BF International – Member of BF S.p.A. CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati presents in collaboration with Salone di Mobile.Milano a new digitally fabricated bivouac ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics — a self sufficient alpine shelter that blends with the rock formations of the Alps.
Powered by solar energy and air condensation, the bivouac provides a lasting refuge for mountaineers. Its dual life is set to begin as an urban pavilion during the Games, before being airlifted to its permanent home at high altitude.

What happens when the office grows out into the garden?
At the Biennale Architettura 2025 in Venice, CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati unveiled modular “Post Office Pods”: nine green-roofed units that let visitors work, meet, 3D print, or even nap outdoors. Solar panels, cascading plants, and water collection make each pod a sustainable high-tech haven.
After Venice, the pods will be replicated and rolled out across Italy’s 7,000 post offices as part of Poste Italiane’s Polis Project, bridging the urban-rural divide and transforming post offices into hubs for innovation and community.
