𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽.

In the past, cities were islands of architecture within a green sea, but now the opposite is the case. Cities are sprawling further as... their populations grow, leaving inhabitants isolated from the natural world. Today, attempts are being made to spread green elements throughout our cities. But CRA takes it further: making greenery accessible to everyone.

This idea has been proposed in Singapore, with the 280-meter CapitaSpring tower, designed together with BIG, which houses a tropical forest suspended in the air, accessible to anyone who wants to visit.

Working to create accessible and affordable natural spaces is essential to creating more livable and sustainable cities.

Last March we witnessed the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, so we immediately took action, and ...what you see today is a pro bono proposal for what we believe to be among the best solutions for the city of Baltimore.

The vision that guides our office is to design for people, in coexistence with nature, through the support of technology. But not only that. We want to make sure that accidents like this never happen again and that the built environment stands up to the passage of time. Our buildings must be designed for the future.

For this reason, we collaborated with Webuild, and consulted with French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux, for the replacement of the collapsed Key Bridge in Baltimore.

The proposed cable-stayed design for the replacement of the Francis Scott Key Bridge aims to redefine the city's harbor entrance while enhancing safety and adaptability. With a longer main span and shallow water placement of support pillars, it mitigates risks of accidents. Increased roadway capacity and clearance meet high traffic demands and industry standards. Smart features, inspired by MIT research, enable effective traffic management and maintenance.

“The Exhibition will search for a path forward, proposing that intelligent solutions to pressing problems can take many forms. Objects, buildings, and urban plans will be arranged along the axis of a multiple and widespread intelligence – organized as natural, artificial, collective, and combinations of the three. While some ideas are destined to fail, others may point us toward redemption”.

CRA's "Sunny Inside" interior design for Zambon Pharma pushes the boundaries ...of biophilic design. Through the latest SunLike LED technology, which mimics the spectral distribution of the sun's power and reproduces it within the confines of the office, the traditional distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces is blurred.

Alongside sunlight, plants enter the workspace, enriching desks and common areas, and further improving workers’ well-being.

Every year during Milan Design Week, we like to visit MEET with our whole team. This project is very special to us, personifying the serendipity of unpredictable encounters, boosting new ideas ...and feelings - something that inspires all of us here at CRA!

The design of @meet.digitalculturecenter strives to achieve serendipity through the hybridization of functions. Such a design approach is best expressed by the central vertical plaza, but it extends throughout the center, to multiple rooms for exhibitions, talks, and performances.

A perfect place for us to enjoy a post-Design Week aperitivo!

There are only two days left to see sunRICE, our installation for Milan Design Week 2024, in the fantastic setting of the Orto Botanico di Brera.

The installations, inspired by Yona Friedman’s metabolic ...structures, represent our latest step in experimenting with materials. After tomatoes, coffee, and mycelium, we are now focusing on rice: the world’s most consumed cereal. This becomes a reflection on how we conceive the built world and how we can use the waste from the materials of our daily lives.

What can we do with rice waste? The debate is just beginning, but with sunRICE, we want to say that we shouldn’t limit ourselves. The possibilities are endless, and as we often say here at CRA, our best project is the one that we are yet to do!

Here at CRA, we are trying to contribute to increasingly thoughtful and sustainable design. As Carlo reminded us in a recent interview for Living Corriere, we are indebted to the Earth, and it is our responsibility to take care of ...it.

That is why our research goes toward integrating the natural and artificial worlds, studying new materials for construction (from rice waste to tomato waste) and constantly innovating on current practices. As designers, we need to ask what can we learn from nature, and what can we learn from the earth?

Qui in CRA cerchiamo di dare il nostro contributo per un design sempre più attento e sostenibile. Come Carlo ci ha ricordato in una recente intervista per Living Corriere, abbiamo un grosso debito con la Terra, ed è nostra responsabilità occuparcene.

Per questo la nostra ricerca va verso l’integrazione tra mondo naturale e mondo artificiale. Studia nuovi materiali per le costruzioni (dagli scarti del riso a quelli del pomodoro) e riflettere per innovare quello che già conosciamo. Come designer dobbiamo chiederci cosa possiamo imparare dalla natura, e cosa possiamo imparare dalla terra?

After the success of last year’s installation, CRA with ...Italo Rota returns to Milan Design Week with an installation created for Gruppo Saviola and constructed by Maestro Technologies.

The form of the pavilion is inspired by the ultimate exponent of circularity: nature itself.

This year’s project, “The Wood Without The Tree”, is a way to showcase the intelligence of the natural world and the benefits of using wholly recycled products in construction. The project will be shown at the Salone del Mobile until 21 April 2024.

CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati, ...together with Italo Rota, unveils a project for Milan Design Week 2024 transforming the Brera Botanical Garden into an immersive pathway exploring the multiple uses of rice - from food to experimental construction material.

The installation consists of a series of geometrical units created from rice husks - the byproduct of rice processing, which is usually discarded.

Evoking the modular, cellular structure of natural materials, starting from a basic triangular form, the units recall both spatial architectures and Yona Friedman's metabolic structures, which can grow within nature and transform to accommodate new functions.

The installation is largely composed of silica-based geopolymer RH-GEO, developed by construction material startup Ricehouse: an inert material that hints at a zero-waste production process.

Developed for global energy company Eni along with three Michelin-star chef Niko Romito, sunRICE will be open to the public until 25th April 2024, as part of the INTERNI Cross Vision exhibition.

𝗜𝗡 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗢 𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗔

Architecture is the answer, but what is the question? Well, Italo was a great innovator – one of those rare designers capable not only of giving new answers, but of asking... himself new questions.

We became friends working together on the Expo Milano 2015 project. But it was after another Expo experience – that of Dubai 2020 – that we began a large-scale collaboration. We have carried out all the projects of the last 5 years together.

In architecture we were passionate about the same themes: interaction with people, new design processes and - ultimately - greater integration between the natural and artificial world.

Italo loved to play, with splendid depth, and the way we met and collaborated in the last years of his career often made me think that design, in its best moments, can equal one of the capabilities of great poetry: being equally synthetic and touching, elliptical and sparkling.

You’ve seen our office, now you can meet our people! Everyone in the CRA team shares the same values: innovation, sustainability, research, and connecting natural and artificial.

First up is Chiara Leonzio, one of our... Project Managers. Chiara is a licensed architect, and studied in London before travelling to Bangalore, India, where she worked as a design manager for several years. In 2023, she came back to Italy where she entered the world of CRA.

“CRA has a world-unique approach to design. It strives for innovation and research, joining forces between experts coming from different fields.

“For example, CapitaSpring - a project in which I did not participate as a designer but that I particularly loved and made me proud to be part of this team - is based on connecting the natural and artificial worlds through technology, to put people at the center of the design process. A concept that is very much reflected in my values” says Chiara, who believes design must bridge diversity, use technology wisely, and enhance the harmony of parts in the composition process. “The building's geometrically designed façade allows natural light and greenery to permeate the tower, creating a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.”

“At CRA,” Chiara concludes, “we dare take unconventional paths, with out-of-the-box solutions, designing the new and redesigning the existing.”

𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸

Today we are unveiling a master plan for a former oil refinery... in the city of Trieste, Italy, transforming it into a renewable energy park. The design, developed for the Port of Trieste, features tanks converted into ‘water batteries’ as part of a 365,000 square meter reclaimed seafront park. The project opens up an inaccessible area of the city’s vast industrial port infrastructure facing the Adriatic Sea at its northernmost point.

Suggesting new ways to reuse former industrial facilities, the design employs renewable energy sources in an integrated way. At the core of the project are six former oil reservoirs – each of them at a height of 15 meters, totaling 110,000 cubic meters of capacity – that will be turned into water batteries.

It was a privilege for CRA to contribute to the reunion of all eight known panels of Piero della Francesca’s Polyptych of St Augustine.

After 555 years, thanks to the ...collaboration between the @poldipezzoli, @frickcollection, @mnaa_lisboa and @nationalgallery museums, the public can fully experience the historic altarpiece with all its evocative power of the Renaissance era. To do so, CRA and Italo Rota recreated the studio of the Italian master, including lights that are digitally modeled after the Tuscan sky.

We wanted to make the visitor travel through space and time. The Polyptych is arranged according to the perspective with which Piero della Francesca designed it. And thanks to Artemide, it was possible to reproduce the light of the Tuscan sky that enlightened the painter's atelier.

For such a special occasion, we want visitors to participate in an emotional journey to fully experience the masterpiece they are standing in front of.

CRA and Italo Rota design an exhibition that reunites the extant panels of one ...of Piero della Francesca's masterpieces, The Polyptych of St. Augustine, scattered all over the world. The display recreates the studio of the Italian master, including lights that are digitally modelled after the Tuscan sky.

“Digital technologies cannot replace the enjoyment of a physical masterpiece such as Piero della Francesca’s Polyptych. However, they can help enhance our physical world. This was the idea, together with Artemide: 3D-scanning the sky of Tuscany to obtain an accurate rendition of Piero della Francesca’s atelier” says Carlo, in a joint statement with Italo Rota.

CRA and Italo Rota's installation immerses the viewer in an experience of seeing the reunited masterpiece through the eyes of Piero della Francesca, reproducing the ambiance and light conditions of della Francesca’s Tuscan atelier.

Visitors take part in an emotional journey where they are invited into the atmosphere of the place where the Polyptych was created. A second room recounts the history of the work, and rebuilds the configuration of the Sant’Agostino church in Sansepolcro (Tuscany) using digital projections: the effect of the altarpiece in its original splendor.

Check out the Hot Heart - one of the main projects featured in a new exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany.

The exhibition, which opens on the 23rd March, sheds light on how the energy industry is changing from a design standpoint, from commonplace renewable energy goods to solar-powered homes and wind farms, and from intelligent transportation systems to imaginative ideas of self-sufficient cities of the future.

Hot Heart is a network of islands that combines thermal energy storage with recreational purposes. It is the winner of the #HelsinkiEnergyChallenge, which intends to decarbonize the heating system of the Finnish city by 2030.

Hot Heart is part of the final section of the exhibition, devoted to the topic of »Future Energyscapes« and what they might look like, including new typologies for energy storage.

«La ...lezione frontale oggi funziona tantissimo online. C'è poca interazione, non ha più bisogno di spazio fisico. Però allo stesso tempo le relazioni e le occasioni di incontro sono fondamentali. Solo nello spazio fisico si viene a creare la chimica di quelli che sono chiamati "legami deboli", fondamentali per la creatività.»

Il campus come luogo per incontri. Le aule come laboratori dove “l’interazione è fondamentale per il sapere”. Le stanze dei professori come meeting room aperte e non come status symbol.

Non a caso, la visione architettonica di CRA per il Campus Mind predilige l’incontro tra persone ma anche tra diverse discipline accademiche.

«Il laboratorio. Magari di biologia, ma non solo: può essere anche il "lab", all'anglosassone, dove l'interazione è fondamentale per il sapere.»

L’università diventa un luogo in cui la comunità accademica e i centri di ricerca e sviluppo che operano nel distretto dell’innovazione interagiscono sempre di più.

Sebbene sia un’idea con diversi interrogativi etici in campo sociale e ambientale, rimane indiscutibile il bisogno di case in California.

The building and ...construction industry is responsible for about 37 percent of the world's carbon dioxide emissions. At CRA we are committed to changing that - through innovation.

One example is the Jian Mu Tower, the world's first "farmscraper," in Shenzhen, China. The office tower features a vertical hydroponic farm on its façade that spans the full height of the building. The building's design allows tenants to grow, purchase and consume fresh fruits and vegetables directly inside the tower.

This interview is a part of an LARB series called ‘The Rules We Live By,’ exploring what it means to be human under a constantly changing set of rules. The series consists of interviews with people who set the rules, reflect extensively on them, or attempt to twist or violate them.

The Atlas of the Senseable City is a significant collection of digital maps for navigating the future urban environment. The book analyzes everything from air pollution to social segregation in cell phone networks using creative data-led visuals.
