How can a building evolve alongside the people who inhabit it?

With the City of Naples, we’re reimagining Le Vele — the iconic modernist complex by Franz Di Salvo — through a collective process of memory, design, and AI.

Stories become spaces. Voices become visions.

... At the Biennale Architettura 2025, a suspended model of Vela Celeste presents AI-generated futures born from community input — a dialogue between memory and transformation.
Not demolition. Not nostalgia. But design in progress.

Our present moment is defined by digital estrangement, and the French Pavilion reclaims physical space as a place for human connections.

Inspired by the legend of Akai Ito—the ...invisible thread that connects kindred souls—a love letter to human connection and the planet that hosts us all.
A spiral stairway welcomes movement.
A quiet garden invites stillness.
Made with recyclable steel and modular textiles, the Pavilion reflects agile, open, and adaptable architecture.

In collaboration with the Municipality of Naples, CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati has launched a participatory project to reimagine Le Vele—the iconic housing complex by Franz Di Salvo in Naples.
Drawing from community voices and powered by AI, the initiative translates personal memories into new spatial visions. It’s architecture not imposed from above, but grown from below.

Presented at Biennale Architettura 2025, the installation features a suspended model of Vela Celeste, enriched with resident portraits and AI-generated futures.

This is not a nostalgic look at the past, nor a radical break. It’s a slow accumulation of feedback, where buildings evolve with people—not despite them.

“Can AI design with us, not just for us?” asks Carlo Ratti.

DUSP Students of class 11.320 taught by Fábio Duarte and Simone Mora presented their solutions to tackle urban heat in the city of #Rome to personnel of the U.S. Embassy to Italy @ambasciatausa and officers of Carabinieri Command of the Forest, Environmental and Agri-food units @carabinieri.forestali. SCL would like to thank Cultural Attaché Karen Schinnerer and Cultural Program Coordinator Tiziana Candiloro for their hospitality and the U.S. Mission to Italy’s 2024 Annual Program Statement (APS) for financial support. Congratulations to these students whose last day of class was today! 🎉 #senseableabroad #urbanheat #MIT #dusp
At Dubai’s AI week, we shared how our global research tackles local challenges, with a special focus on our work at Senseable City Dubai. From #sustainability to #urbaninnovation, our collaboration with @dubaifuture is helping shape new ways of sensing and understanding the city in extreme climate conditions. We are so grateful to our research teams in both Dubai and Cambridge for their brilliant work—we are excited to keep working on these projects! #dubaifuture #ai

Where tech meets resilience, and every point tells a story. ✨ #DataClouds is an immersive exhibit that reveals the complex hidden geometry of Rio’s Vidigal #favela. As part of our Lab’s mission in Rio—a first of its kind in South America—this project is a step toward using advanced tech to better understand and support informal communities. SCL and our partner @journeydotworld are proud to bring this unseen city to life at #BiennaleArchitettura2025. #LiDAR #urbanAI
#Biophilia refers to the benefits that contact with #nature brings to humans. But, do we all value nature the same way across the globe? 🌎 Feeling Nature explores this question. We trained a visual AI model on street view imagery and survey responses from eight cities across different biomes—revealing how people perceive and prioritize nature in their environments.

Umberto recently presented data-based tools that can help city leaders and policymakers make more livable, inclusive, and lively downtowns at @citylab session “Emerging Strategies for Downtown Revitalization”.
“Atlas of the Senseable City,” co-authored by Carlo Ratti and Antoine Picon, was just published this week by Yale University Press. The book examines how dynamic mapping of cities—using digital technologies to map changing aspects of a city in motion, e.g. pollution, pedestrian flows, commuting traffic—creates new opportunities to visualize information, address urban challenges, implement change, and understand the built environment in more depth. “Used correctly, maps can be irreplaceable tools for democracy,” says Carlo Ratti, director of the Senseable City Lab. “New maps make the world more visible to all. The right maps can help individuals navigate the chaos of modern life, and empower activists to notice and highlight problems in their communities.” Link in our bio to purchase a copy!

In 2018, SCL introduced City Scanner, a mobile sensing platform for fleets of everyday vehicles that promised a more cost-effective, localized measurement of urban air pollution and heat than traditional methods. SCL has now launched Flatburn, an open-source City Scanner. A step-by-step guide — including hardware schematics, 3D-printable designs and data acquisition software — is made freely available, so citizens can deploy and customize Flatburn themselves. Check out the link in our bio for more news coverage of Flatburn, or visit senseable.mit.edu/flatburn/ for more information.
What’s the trade-off between privacy and benefits of data-driven solutions? Introducing: Data Slots, a game developed by a team at SCL to evaluate decisions about sharing one’s personal data and how it can be used to shape solutions to urban challenges. In a few short rounds, players collect data cards to design and create a data-driven idea to apply to three scenarios: a public space, a living environment, or a work environment. The proposed ideas are tracked on a global scoreboard then ranked by other players, allowing peers to engage and assess each other’s proposals. Data Slots has been played over 700 times in dozens of countries from Norway to Colombia to Lebanon and is now available online in 12 languages. Are you ready to play? Visit the link in our bio or go to https://dataslots.org #datascience #senseablecitylab #urbandata #dataslots #bigdata #dataprivacy #urbansolutions #urbanplanning
Where do stolen bicycles in Amsterdam go? Researchers at MIT and AMS Institute recently revealed the results of a collaborative project "Bike Trafficking" in which 100 bikes were fitted with mobile trackers and chained in high-theft areas of the city. Over a six-month period, 70 bikes were stolen; 68 remained in Amsterdam; and 22 moved in a such a similar way as to suggest a subnetwork. As Melanie van der Horst, deputy mayor of Amsterdam, said to MIT News, “This research makes it clear that part of bicycle theft is organized.”
